When converting to JPG makes sense

  • Photos of people, places or products — JPG was made for this
  • Email or form attachments — JPG is universally accepted
  • Shrinking heavy PNGs — up to 95% smaller
  • Posting on old sites or legacy systems — maximum compatibility

Heads up: JPG doesn't support transparency

If your image has a transparent background (logos, icons, cutouts), converting to JPG turns the background white automatically. To preserve transparency, prefer converting to WEBP — same smaller-file benefit, with the alpha channel kept.

How much space do I save?

  • PNG → JPG: 80% to 95% smaller (regular photo)
  • WEBP → JPG: similar or slightly larger files; convert for compatibility, not size

Convert several files at once?

Yes, up to 30 files per batch. You can mix PNGs and WEBPs and convert them all to JPG in a single pass, then download as .zip or one by one.

What happens to quality when converting PNG to JPG?

Converting PNG to JPG involves lossy compression: the algorithm discards fine details the human eye typically doesn't notice. For common photos — portraits, landscapes, products — the result is visually identical to the original even at Medium level.

The exception is images with thin text, very sharp edges or few-color gradients (typical in logos and screenshots). In those cases, JPG may produce artifacts — small "halos" or smearing around edges. For those images, WEBP or PNG are better choices.

Can I reverse a JPG back to PNG?

Technically yes — TinyFoto converts JPG to PNG. But the quality lost in the original JPG compression isn't recovered: you'll have a larger PNG file, with the same quality as the JPG. Converting to PNG only makes sense when you need the format (for example, a system that requires PNG), not to "recover" quality.

This is why best practice is to always keep the original file before compressing. If you have a high-quality PNG, convert to JPG only when publishing or sending — never as a working file.

Is JPG still the most compatible format in 2026?

Yes, for general sharing and use, JPG remains the most universally supported format. Any device — old cameras, printers, corporate systems, messaging apps — opens JPG without issues. WEBP has near-universal browser support but still faces restrictions in some contexts (email, older editing software). For sharing with anyone on any platform without compatibility worries, JPG is still the safest choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the conversion destructive? Will I lose my original file?

No. TinyFoto generates a new file for download — your original is not touched. You download the converted JPG and the PNG/WEBP original remains intact on your device.

Can I convert HEIC (iPhone photo) to JPG?

TinyFoto accepts JPG, PNG and WEBP. To convert HEIC to JPG, you first need to convert the HEIC to one of these formats. On iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible so new photos already come out as JPG.

Which level should I use when converting PNG to JPG for best quality?

Use Low level for maximum quality (ideal for printing or archiving) or Medium for web and email use. Avoid High level if the content has text or sharp edges.

Does the filename change after converting?

Yes. The downloaded file will automatically have the .jpg extension. If you uploaded "photo.png", you'll download "photo.jpg".
