Ideal Image Size for Every Social Media Platform in 2026

Every social media platform has its own recommended dimensions — and all of them re-compress images that arrive in the wrong size. When you upload a photo in the wrong format, the platform crops, stretches or degrades quality to fit its own standards. Knowing the right dimensions is the difference between a sharp photo and a blurry one.

This guide covers updated dimensions for the major platforms, with tips on weight and format.

The four aspect ratios that rule social media 1:1 Square feed 1080×1080 IG, FB, LinkedIn 4:5 Portrait feed 1080×1350 Instagram 9:16 Stories & Reels 1080×1920 16:9 Landscape 1280×720 / 1600×900 YouTube, Twitter
Pick the ratio first — the right pixel count follows automatically.

Instagram

Instagram accepts square, portrait and landscape images — each with different ideal dimensions:

  • Square feed post: 1080×1080 px (1:1 ratio)
  • Portrait feed post: 1080×1350 px (4:5 ratio) — takes up more feed space, tends to get higher engagement
  • Landscape feed post: 1080×566 px (1.91:1 ratio)
  • Stories and Reels: 1080×1920 px (9:16 ratio)
  • Profile photo: 320×320 px (displayed at 110×110 in the feed)
  • Carousel: same dimensions as feed, all images with the same ratio

Format and weight: JPG for photos, PNG for images with text. Aim for 200 KB to 1 MB. Above that, Instagram compresses more aggressively and quality drops.

Facebook

  • Feed post (photo): 1200×630 px — 1.91:1 ratio
  • Square post: 1080×1080 px
  • Stories: 1080×1920 px
  • Profile cover photo: 851×315 px (desktop) / 640×360 px (mobile)
  • Profile photo: minimum 180×180 px, displayed at 170×170
  • Page cover (fanpage): 820×312 px (desktop) / 640×360 px (mobile)
  • Shared link image: 1200×628 px

Format and weight: JPG for photos. 8 MB limit per image, but aim under 500 KB for fast loading.

LinkedIn

  • Post with image: 1200×628 px (landscape) or 1080×1080 px (square)
  • Article (cover image): minimum 744×400 px, recommended 1200×628 px
  • Profile photo: 400×400 px (minimum 200×200 px)
  • Profile background photo: 1584×396 px
  • Company page cover: 1128×191 px
  • Company logo: 300×300 px

Format and weight: JPG or PNG. 5 MB limit. For professional posts, prioritize clean, well-lit images.

Twitter / X

  • Tweet image (landscape): 1600×900 px — 16:9 ratio displays best in the feed
  • Tweet image (portrait): 1080×1350 px
  • Profile photo: 400×400 px
  • Header photo: 1500×500 px
  • Summary Card with large image: minimum 300×157 px, recommended 1200×628 px

Format and weight: JPG, PNG or GIF. 5 MB limit for JPG/PNG, 15 MB for GIF.

Pinterest

Pinterest is inherently vertical — portrait images perform far better than landscape.

  • Standard Pin: 1000×1500 px (2:3 ratio) — the ideal format
  • Long Pin: 1000×2100 px (1:2.1 ratio) — maximum before cropping
  • Square Pin: 1000×1000 px
  • Profile photo: 165×165 px

Format and weight: JPG or PNG. No explicit limit, but aim under 10 MB. Vertical images with lots of detail benefit from PNG for crisp text.

YouTube

  • Video thumbnail: 1280×720 px (16:9 ratio) — required for custom thumbnails
  • Channel profile photo: 800×800 px (displayed as a circle)
  • Channel art (banner): 2560×1440 px — safe area visible on all devices: 1546×423 px centered

Format and weight: JPG or PNG for thumbnails. 2 MB limit for thumbnails. Banner can be up to 6 MB.

TikTok

  • Video (main format): 1080×1920 px (9:16 vertical)
  • Profile photo: 200×200 px minimum
  • Photo post image: 1080×1080 px or 1080×1920 px

Format and weight: JPG or PNG for profile photos. TikTok is primarily video — profile images have less impact than on other networks.

How to prepare images for any social media platform

The process is always the same regardless of platform:

  1. Edit the image at the correct ratio (crop before compressing)
  2. Export at the recommended resolution (the values above)
  3. Compress the file to the ideal weight — between 200 KB and 1 MB for most cases
  4. Use JPG for photos and PNG for images with text or transparency

To quickly compress before uploading to any platform, use TinyFoto — processes JPG, PNG and WEBP in the browser without uploading to any server.

The 4-step prep flow 1 crop Right ratio 2 export Right resolution 3 compress Under 1 MB 4 upload Publish
Skip step 3 and the platform will recompress your image — usually worse than you would.
